Vicksburg, MS: Elizabeth Pajerski (1916–2003) stands as a prominent figure in Mississippi’s artistic and civic history. Originally from Meridian, Pajerski settled in Vicksburg in 1938, where she made significant contributions to the local art community and various civic organizations.
Pajerski mastered a variety of mediums, including oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, pen and ink, charcoal, mixed media, and printmaking. Her works were showcased in exhibitions spanning local, state, and national levels. Among her notable paintings is Mississippi River Bridge, which sold at auction in 2020, highlighting the enduring appeal of her artistry.
Pajerski actively participated in the art world through memberships in multiple organizations. These included the Vicksburg Art Association, the Mississippi State Art Association, and the Meridian Art Association. She was also a member of the Mississippi Chapter of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Beyond her artistic involvement, Pajerski committed to her community. She joined the Vicksburg Garden Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and other civic groups.
Her legacy extends to education and preservation. Elizabeth Pajerski ensured her artistic legacy would endure by generously donating her entire collection to Mississippi College after her passing. Many of these works now reside in the college’s permanent collection. She established an endowment fund to provide scholarships for emerging artists, seamlessly blending her commitment to creativity with her dedication to supporting future generations.
Pajerski expressed her faith, civic dedication, and creativity through her involvement with First Baptist Church. Her deep connection to Vicksburg shaped her contributions to both the art world and the local community. Truly, such an inspiration lives on within the Heart of Vicksburg.
